Tom Wontner was born in London, England in 1971. He has appeared in many independent features and shorts. Recently, he played eccentric physicist "Cooper" in Matthew Dixon ' Elemental Storage (2009). He received much notoriety and was nominated for Best Actor at the Maverick Movie Award s 2009, for his disturbing portrayal of a psychotic music producer in Amber Moelter 's reality-style docudrama, Dirty Step Upstage (2009). Due for release in 2010, the film left preview audiences shocked and confused as the line, between drama and real-life, blurs with fatal and bizarre consequences. He also played "Frank" in Hopscotch Films' $4.2M sinister horror film, The Sick House (2008), filmed in East London, with Jeepers Creepers (2001) star Gina Philips , being released by New Line Cinema in March 2008. He also played the doctor to Spandau Ballet 's Gary Kemp in Karma Magnet (2008) . He starred in a variety of feature films released in 2006 and 2007, including the bizarre comedy, Cross-Eyed Waltz (2005), by Peter Hearn , Troubled Children Films' Quality Indigo (2005) and Carey Films' poignant A Mind of Her Own (2006). He played the geeky romantic lead, "Trevor", alongside Roy Hudd , in Grindstone Films' Jack, the Last Victim (2005) (V). A psychological thriller, based on an unnerving musical about Jack the Ripper, London's most notorious serial killer. In 2004, his portrayal of hapless undercover reporter "Martin Cosgrave" in Magnificent Pictures' The Haircutter's Cut (2004), was short-listed to the final top six in BBC/CSV Night of Many Stars for new London film-making talent. Later that year, his documentary, Super Hero Dads (2004), was used as part of the Bob Geldof Channel 4 documentary, "Geldof on Fathers". He has been cast in many successful independent shorts, including roles in Hard Case (2006) (Cannes SFC 2006), Tunnel Vision (2003) (BFI 24hr challenge), The Control Room (2005), "William" in Kritzi: The Little Goat (2004) and the unpleasant and immoral "Ian" in Lonely Face (2003). He also played the bumbling "Sebastian" in the Cornish comedy, Obedience (2003/II), and the notoriously unsympathetic doctor in RAM Productions' black comedy, Lifelines (2004). Rockfall Film's black comedy, Dentally Does It (2005), in which Tom plays "Paul the Dentist", was officially selected for screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival in April 2005. An experienced filmmaker, he also produced the comic romance, My Yacht (2006), screened in film festivals world-wide, including Dallas, Raindance, Edinburgh, Sacramento and the Commonwealth Film Festival. He also produced and acted in the horror short, Witch's Spring (2004), for the British 24-Hour Film Challenge, September 2004, which was been chosen for the H.P. Lovecraft -inspired horror compilation feature, LovecraCked! The Movie (2006), premiering in New York in July 2006. Tom voiced "Michael" in Ben Crowe 's Palm D'Or-shortlisted The Man Who Met Himself (2005), the only British film to have been officially selected to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2005. He also won Best Actor for his role as "Ben" in My Yacht (2006), at the Wreck-Beach International Film Festival in Ontario Canada.
His great grandfather, Arthur Wontner , was an actor. Arthur was most famous for playing the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in the first 5 films about the great sleuth, first appearing as Holmes in The Sleeping Cardinal (1931).His great uncle Hilary Wontner was also an actor.He is a descendant of poet William Wordsworth , and has played "William" in events taking place in the poet's home at Rydal Mount in the Lake District, England.He spent his early career working in various aspects of television production, including sound and camera, and subsequently presenting and producing at companies such as United Artists/Telewest 94-96. He worked as a Location Reporter for Cable Today, UATV (United Artists Television) Telewest, Channel 17 and notably made Travel shows about Picardy , Paris and Disneyland Paris 'Cable Today En Francais'.
